Indexing FAQs
Does my book need an index?
Yes. An index is a powerful navigational tool that provides your reader multiple access points to the most important concepts in your text, as well as guides them to thematically related topics. This is invaluable to potential buyers of your book, as well as future users, looking to find and discover information.
Why hire a professional indexer?
Professional indexers have undergone extensive training to write indexes according to indexing standards. Using specialized software, they can format, edit, and adjust indexes according to house style criteria.
The professional indexer writes indexes with the reader in mind, focusing on how they will search for the information in your book. Carefully chosen main headings, relevant subheadings, and useful cross-references will guide your reader through the information in your book. Because they are reading your book with fresh eyes, professional indexers have the advantage of objectivity, which translates to a clear and useful index for your reader.
With this specialized knowledge and approach, professional indexers write quality indexes that add significant value to your book. Importantly, they are able to do so in a short timeframe and can meet the deadlines of your book’s publication.
How much does an index cost?
Rates depend on the type of book (scholarly publication, trade book, textbook), density of the text (number of words per page), deadline for the completion of the index, and index specifications set by the publisher.
My rates are competitive and follow the industry standard. The rate for trade books and textbooks is $4.00 to $6.00 per indexable page and the rate for scholarly books is $5.00 to $7.00 per indexable page. That said, each project is unique and could even fall above or below the stated range.

How long does the index process take?
Turnaround time is typically 7 to 10 days, but can be shorter or longer depending on the project. This gives me time to thoroughly read your book, analyze its text, and construct and edit the index. Rush orders are more than welcome if my indexing schedule allows.
Once the index is complete, I will send it to you for approval and give you a chance to request minor adjustments. Payment is due 30 days after the completed index has been accepted, at which point the copyright becomes yours.
